HOME-SCHOOL-COMMUNITY
THE FIRST THREE YEARS OF OUR
STRATEGIC RESPONSE TO COVID-19
It is three years since John Lyon’s Charity first
launched its Home-School-Community Strategy
(HSC) - our response to the impact of Covid-19
upon grantees within our Beneficial Area. This
milestone marks the halfway point of our six-year
plan, spanning from 2021 to 2027.
To ensure the most effective distribution of the additional
spend, we created five new Grant Funds to guarantee
groups were reached, rehabilitated and helped with
recovery in the aftermath of not only Covid-19, but also
the subsequent Cost-of-Living crisis. Those funds were
Recovery, Collaboration, Replication, Cultural Capital and
This year’s Annual Report focuses on what we have
achieved since April 2021, what we have learned, and
how we are adapting and responding to changing need.
As a reminder, this response was – and still is – in addition
to our regular grant giving and main Five-Year Strategy.
We didn’t pause our funding or grants programmes while
defining this response; we felt that to pause and look inward
at a time of unprecedented need was something that our
grantees could ill-afford.
Embedding the learning from Home-School-Community
into our Five-Year Strategy is imperative. Whilst at its roots
HSC is the Charity’s response to the pandemic, it was also
designed to enable the Charity to test its new ideas and
approaches to grant making, ensuring that lessons learned
are not in silos but filtered into the Open Grants Programme
when appropriate. Now into the fourth year of the six-year
initiative, learning is beginning to come to fruition and
influence our wider grant making for the future.
Our commitment to providing additional funding of £22 million
over six years through the Home-School-Community Strategy
was designed to focus on the three key pillars of a young
person’s life: home, school, and community. Since young
people spend most of their time in these environments, it’s
been central to the Charity’s mission to work collaboratively
across them, partnering with organisations that are already
making a positive impact in these areas. The additional
funding was and is designed to reinforce this holistic
approach and demonstrate that each vertex of the funding
triangle (Home-School-Community) is as important as
another in impacting on children and young people and
their future life chances.
