Additionally, the Refurbishment Fund reinforced our
commitment to inclusivity, as eight of the 22 requests
granted had direct benefits for SEND young people; these
included venue accessibility modifications, accessible
toilet facilities and the refurbishment of youth spaces used
specifically by young people with additional needs. The
focus on reducing barriers to participation aligns with the
Charity’s long-term vision of ensuring equal opportunities
for all young people, regardless of their needs.
CASE STUDY
Acton Park Playcentre Leisure Events (APPLE)
In June 2023, APPLE was awarded a £25,000 grant to
relocate and renew their kitchen where they teach young
people cooking and catering qualifications. Prior to the
grant, APPLEs’ base had one indoor delivery space which
it used for its youth club, Arts club and a cooking club as
the kitchen was also located here. With the contents of the
internal storeroom relocated to an external container this
liberated space was an ideal spot for the kitchen.
“IT’S VERY MUCH ABOUT
MAKING SURE THAT THE
VENUE ITSELF IS AS
SPECIALIST AS WHAT GOES
ON INSIDE OF IT”
The Charity’s grant has benefited APPLE immensely.
Having the kitchen relocated from the main room
has increased the number of young people they can
accommodate indoors which was limited before. Cooking
is also one of their most popular activities and with a
new larger kitchen even more young people can take
part, improving confidence and learning new skills.
CONCLUSION
The Refurbishment Fund is positively transforming spaces
across the Beneficial Area by improving the environment
and facilities young people visit regularly, leading to
more enjoyable experiences and aiding in recovery from
the effects of the pandemic. The Charity has taken note
of the impact being made here and has included the
Refurbishment Fund as part of the new Five-Year
Strategy launched in 2023, affirming its commitment
beyond Home-School-Community.
